So when Lily started thinking about what to give her Nan Carolyn for such a significant milestone birthday, she wanted something different. Something personal. The song, titled Magic Nan, was written entirely from Lily's memories and stories about the grandmother she has always adored. Reading through her questionnaire, it became obvious very quickly that this wasn't just a song about an 80th birthday. It was a song about the moments that make a family.

Some of Lily's favourite memories happened at Carolyn's home in Umina, a place she remembers as being full of orchids, gardens and adventure. The song opens with the lines, "Down in Umina where the gardens bloomed bright, Magic Nan's house was all warmth and light," immediately setting the scene for the place that became such a big part of her childhood. From there, the song dives into memories of climbing trees while Nan quietly encouraged it and Mum remained blissfully unaware, water balloon fights in the backyard, and school holidays that felt like they would last forever.

What made this song so enjoyable to write was the balance between heartfelt and funny. Lily didn't just tell us about Carolyn's achievements. She told us about the real person behind them. The Nan who is somehow better with technology than the younger generations. The Nan who has a habit of taking plant cuttings from neighbours' gardens despite the family's horror. The Nan who spent countless hours helping create a Year 12 textile project made up of hundreds of Suffolk flowers, only for both of them to swear they'd never make another one by the time it was finished.

At the same time, there was a deeper story running through everything Lily shared. Carolyn's career as a nurse educator, her contribution to teaching future nurses, and the example she set throughout her life clearly left a lasting impression. In fact, Lily credits her Nan as one of the reasons she became a nurse herself. That connection became one of the most meaningful moments in the song, with the lyric, "Made me want to be a nurse you'd be proud to see."

The song also pays tribute to the life Carolyn built before Lily was even born. Her travels around Australia with Roger, Claire and Stu, her love of music, and even the flute she played years ago all found their way into the lyrics. These details might seem small on their own, but together they create a picture of a life that has been rich, full and deeply loved.

One of my favourite parts of the story was learning about the knitted gifts Carolyn makes for her grandchildren. Not only does she create keepsakes, clothes and toys, but she often hides little notes and tags inside them. It's such a simple gesture, but it says so much about the kind of person she is. Thoughtful. Caring. The sort of person who leaves little pieces of love behind for people to find later.

That's really what Magic Nan became. Not a song about turning 80, but a song about the impact one person can have on the people around them. The chorus captures it perfectly: "You turn ordinary moments into something grand." After reading Lily's stories, it felt like the most accurate way to describe Carolyn.

A personalised song makes a particularly special 80th birthday gift because, at that stage of life, it's rarely about wanting more things. The gifts that matter most are the ones that remind us of the people we've loved, the memories we've created and the legacy we've built.
